This week is International Data Privacy Week. This is an international effort to create awareness about digital data privacy and how it is being used and sometimes exploited by businesses.
Many people are unaware of how their digital activity and personal data are being collected and shared with large corporations. Data Privacy Week gives the power to control privacy back to the users. Unsuspecting users can easily become targets of cyber stalking and scams. Although there are cyber laws in place, as technology continues to rapidly expand we see this problem as an increasing threat. Here are some tips to help keep your data secure.
1. Manage your privacy
Take into account all your information that is available online. Be aware of which websites have access to your personal information, and make sure you know all the relevant privacy settings.
2. Change your passwords
Changing your passwords is a simple and effective way to protect your data. As passwords are very prone to data leaks, it is best to update your passwords every few months.
3. Learn more about your data privacy
Don't be afraid to do some digging and learn more about protecting yourself. Read up on how big companies (even the ones we use the most like Google and Facebook) collect your data and what they use it for.
