Is what you are doing today going to help you with where you want to be tomorrow?

December 29, 2016 | Savannah Francis

Sometimes we get sidetracked by things that are not conducive to our ultimate goals. Ask yourself if what you're doing today is going to get you closer to where you want to be tomorrow.

Starting a new project, a business, a personal goal, or a new adventure can be very exciting. The rush of adrenaline that we experience in the beginning could power a small city and is what keeps us up at night dreaming of success.

Overtime we can sometimes find ourselves becoming distracted or even discouraged. This can happen for many reasons. It is important to recognize the distractions and to correct them quickly.

Let's discuss some of the reasons;

- Your initial expectations of success aren't developing as quickly as expected

Setting mini goals is very important with starting any new project or task. However, the idea setting goals can sometimes subconsciously create expectations that may be unrealistic. Setting a goal to reach out to 10 potential clients a week is great, but your rate of successfully capturing a client may only be 1 out of every 10. If you have it in your mind that you are going 10 for 10 or even 7 out of 10 you are possibly setting yourself up for disappointment. Rather than celebrating that one client you were able to tackle you are now focusing on the loss. Set reasonable expectations in the beginning, of course shoot for the stars, dream big and never doubt yourself but always, ALWAYS celebrate the mini-successes. Because all those mini successes add up to one huge success! Remember.... Rome wasn't built in a day.

- You are becoming "comfortable" with your routine

Day by day, you get up, you brush your teeth, you use the restroom, you take a shower (if you're lucky, and you don't have kids tugging at your feet), you get dressed and you're off to start your day. We are human and we are creatures of habit. Once we start to do the same thing over and over again we become comfortable with our routine. If your goal is to lose weight you have to switch up your work outs. If it is a business you are running you have to challenge yourself and your office. Make sure that whatever you are doing it is something that is going to help you grow, it is going to help you achieve those goals. And when you do find that you have achieved your initial goal, create a new one. Don't ever find yourself getting too "comfortable" because that is when we lose sight of our actual dream and start to question "why am I even doing this?"

- Things are running so smoothly that you don't feel the need to keep as close of a watch as you once did

This can sometimes happen when you've hit your goal. You did it! Congratulations! This is an exciting moment. You've reached that point where you feel like everything is running so smoothly that you can back off a bit. You can start to wonder and you can start to focus on other projects. While this can be true you want to make sure that you don't totally lose sight of what your initial goal was. There is nothing more devastating than putting your blood, sweat and tears into something and having it all unravel right under your nose. Make sure to always stay in the know.

- You allow others to pull you in their direction

If you are like me, you want to help everyone. Someone needs a favor or advice and they always come running to you. While this is a great attribute to have make sure that you aren't so focused on others and helping them achieve their goals that you lose sight of your own. Learn and accept that it is okay to say "no."

My husband calls me his butterfly, when I dream... I dream BIG. And it is rare that he can keep up with me and my ideas. Heck! It’s rare that I can keep up with my own ideas. I constantly have to check myself to make sure that what I am doing and what I am working on is going to help me achieve my current goals. So, if you are a dreamer like me, or if you fall into any of the above categories don't be discouraged. You've got BIG plans, and you are making them happen! Just remember to stay on task.

Make sure to always ask yourself if what you're doing today is getting you closer to where you want to be tomorrow.
